Recent amendments in immigration law have impacted also the procedure to become an Italian citizen.
The introduction of Decree Law n. 113 of October the 4th, 2018 has doubled the timing of the procedure to become a citizen based on residency or marriage with an Italian spouse. Indeed, after the enactment of the above decree, the authorities have now 48 months (instead of the previous 24 months) from the application date to complete the citizenship procedure (by accepting or refusing the application).
But not only that, the new legislation also introduced a new requirement, lacking which the application will be deemed inadmissible. Applicants have now to submit evidence, together with the other documents, proving their knowledge of the Italian language at at least a level of B1 (based on the applicable criteria dictated by European law).
Last but not least, the fee connected to the applications has now increased from euro 200 to euro 250.
